Top 10 Things to Bring on a Road Trip

This past weekend my family and I went on two-day road trips, which meant we spent over 10 hours in the car together. I think I pretty much have down what we need for a successful road trip with our family, so I thought I would share that with you:

1) A Backpack – Ditch the purse and choose comfortable and light backpack. Even if you are past the diaper bag stage, believe me, the backpack still helps. This will make sure your hands are free and you have more room (because you know you end up having to carry everything). I just bought this one and it was awesome. The large zipper part is against your back which is good for safety. There are two smaller zipper pockets for things you need easy access to and side pockets for your water bottle. This came in so handy!

2) Wipes – I don’t care how old my boys are, they still seem to make a mess if they eat in the car. I always keep wipes in the glove box “just in case”.

3) First Aid Kit – I have one I keep in my backpack and a larger one we always keep in the car. This Welly Bandage brand is cute, and the bandages are really good quality. Don’t go cheap on bandages or else you end up with kids crying because they keep falling off.

4) Multi-Port Car Charger – It never fails, all my kids’ devices have low battery at the same time. Save yourself a big headache and get a multi-port car charger so everyone can charge their phones, iPads, etc. at the same time.

5) Extra Cup Holder – If your car does not have enough cup holders for everyone or if you are like us and your husband claims one for his keys and phone…then get an extra one. The few dollars for the cup holder is worth not having to clean up a spilled juice or soda.

6) Plastic Bags – If you don’t have extra plastic bags from grocery shopping, think about purchasing a few just to keep in the car. These are good for garbage, dirty diapers, car sickness, wet clothes, etc. This is something we always have in our car.

7) Blankets – My husband thinks keeping the AC on the lowest possible setting is normal. So, I always make sure the kids and I have blankets, so we are all happy. During the winter I even have a plug-in heated blanket (it’s so cozy!).

8) Easy Snacks – The key to these snacks is that they are quick, clean, and doesn’t make you too thirsty. To be honest, most of the time I make the kids a bag to keep next to them and one for us to keep up front. The kids get rationed on drinks because otherwise we would have to stop every 5 minutes.

9) Drugs – Don’t be weird, you know what I mean. Motion sickness pills, Advil, Tylenol, and allergy meds. There is nothing worse than feeling the headache coming on and knowing you are miles away from a store. Make sure you’re stocked up before you leave.

10) Travel Tray – If you have a little one, this is handy for both activities and eating. This will keep (some) things from dropping in the floor and you having to do a contortionist act trying to reach things in the back seat.
